EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
