Are You Able to Crack This? The Forgotten Dutch Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe
One can find many candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber to planks using virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic and artistic supremacy across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part converted the circular motion into vertical motion for the cutting blade. Another component changed that same rotary motion into a lateral motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine them so they operated in a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting on every descending stroke while moving with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”
